Hydrogen research from technology to energy system
We combine experimental research, applied engineering and systems thinking across the hydrogen value chain.

Research with real-world purpose
Our work links individual technologies with the wider questions of integration, safety, economics and deployment.
We work from laboratory to pilot scale and collaborate extensively with industry so that research reflects practical engineering needs.

Connected across the hydrogen system
Hydrogen production and electrolysis
We investigate alkaline, PEM and AEM technologies across a range of scales, focusing on efficiency, durability, dynamic operation, gas purity, controls and balance of plant. Current work includes AEM development through to a 100 kW demonstration platform.
Purification, compression and storage
Our research covers hydrogen conditioning, conventional and electrochemical compression, high-pressure gaseous storage, dispensing and the interaction between production, storage and end use.

Utilisation, safety and systems engineering
Research includes fuel cells and hydrogen applications in industry, transport and buildings, alongside HAZOP, HAZID, DSEAR, ATEX, hazardous-area assessment and safe systems integration. We also examine how operating conditions, controls and downstream requirements affect whole-system performance.
Industrial decarbonisation, economics and policy
Through programmes such as SWIC and IDRIC, we examine where hydrogen can make a practical contribution alongside electrification, CCUS and other options. Techno-economic and systems analysis connects experimental research with deployment and investment decisions. This includes the effects of electricity price, utilisation, infrastructure and operating strategy on the practical case for hydrogen.
Bring us the research question
We work with organisations that need experimental evidence, technology development or systems-level understanding.
