Hydrogen technology development, testing and demonstration

Specialist facilities and experienced researchers supporting work from laboratory investigation through to pilot-scale demonstration.

What we can do with partners

Our capabilities support both university-led research and collaborative work with technology developers, equipment manufacturers and industrial operators.

Testing programmes are shaped around the technology and the questions that need answering, rather than a fixed service catalogue.

Electrolyser testing & development

We work across alkaline, PEM and AEM electrolysis, investigating efficiency, durability, flexible operation, gas purity, controls and balance-of-plant behaviour. Facilities range from small research systems to pilot-scale platforms, including a 100 kW AEM demonstration system.

Purification, compression & analysis

Research and testing can cover hydrogen conditioning, separation, purification and compression using conventional and electrochemical approaches. Analytical capability includes gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, moisture measurement and oxygen analysis.

High-pressure hydrogen & component testing

The Centre has infrastructure for hydrogen compression, storage and testing at elevated pressures. Bespoke programmes can assess valves, actuators, fittings and pressure-system equipment through cycling, pressure hold, leakage and functional testing.

Systems integration & demonstration

Partner technologies can be installed within dedicated pilot areas and connected to hydrogen, electrical supplies, instrumentation and supporting utilities. This allows complete systems to be studied rather than components in isolation.

Safety engineering

Our experience includes HAZOP and HAZID studies, DSEAR and ATEX assessment, hazardous-area classification, ventilation and release considerations, operating procedures and safety-case development for experimental and pilot systems.
