Research, innovation and deployment in Wales
Connecting technology development with industrial decarbonisation, infrastructure and the transition to a cleaner energy system.

A Welsh hydrogen research platform
H2Wales reflects more than two decades of work with industrial, academic and public-sector partners across the region.
The focus is practical: where hydrogen can contribute, what infrastructure is required, and how research can support credible deployment.

South Wales contains a significant concentration of energy-intensive industry. Our work examines where hydrogen can make a practical contribution alongside other decarbonisation options and what infrastructure or operational changes would be required.

Hydrogen production
Wales has opportunities to produce low-carbon hydrogen using renewable electricity and other low-carbon energy sources. Research must also address flexible operation, electricity availability, purity, compression, storage and the relationship between production and demand.

Infrastructure and energy systems
Future hydrogen deployment depends on more than individual technologies. Storage, transport, electricity networks, industrial demand and ports all influence where hydrogen can be produced and used effectively.
Research, evidence and policy
Hydrogen policy continues to evolve as technologies, costs and applications become better understood. H2Wales contributes evidence through research, modelling and practical demonstration, helping partners understand both opportunities and limitations.
More than twenty years of Welsh hydrogen development
Earlier programmes including CymruH₂Wales, LCRI, FLEXIS, RICE and early vehicle and infrastructure projects provide a useful record of how hydrogen research and deployment thinking have evolved.
