A research centre built around practical hydrogen innovation
Connecting University of South Wales expertise, specialist facilities and collaboration with the wider clean-energy transition.

About H2Wales
H2Wales represents the hydrogen research, technology development and collaborative activity centred on the University of South Wales Hydrogen Research & Development Centre.
Its purpose is to connect research expertise with practical technology development and the wider clean-energy transition in Wales.

Hydrogen Research & Development Centre
Based at Baglan Energy Park in Neath Port Talbot, the Centre was established in 2008 to provide a dedicated environment for applied hydrogen research beyond conventional laboratory scale.
Today its work spans hydrogen production, purification, compression, storage, utilisation, component testing, safety and systems integration.

SERC & the University of South Wales
The Hydrogen Centre forms part of the Sustainable Environment Research Centre — SERC — bringing hydrogen research into a wider interdisciplinary environment spanning sustainable energy, environmental technologies and resource management.
Our approach combines academic research with engineering application and extensive collaboration with external partners.
More than two decades of hydrogen research
Hydrogen research at USW predates the Hydrogen Centre itself. Over time, activity has grown from early work on production, fuel cells and vehicles into major programmes covering electrolysis, high-pressure hydrogen, industrial decarbonisation and integrated energy systems.
Expertise behind the technology
Researchers and engineers bring expertise across chemical engineering, electrochemistry, hydrogen systems, fuel cells, safety, industrial decarbonisation and energy-system analysis.

Based in South Wales, connected internationally
The Hydrogen Centre is located at Baglan Energy Park, close to the major industrial areas of South Wales. This location provides a strong connection to regional industry while supporting collaboration across the UK and internationally.
